I'm so excited to share a few changes with you. As most of you know, I am opening a salon in May. Until then, I will continue to freelance at the South side Christina and Company. Contrary to some of my guests beliefs, I am not ill and I did not die! Please don't panic. I'm where I've been all year. Along with this, I made a lot of changes to my website that I would like to share with you.

1. My Home Page- It has been brought to my attention that I'm not always the best when it comes to smiling. I am a very happy, outgoing person, yet when it comes to being photographed, I tend to live for drama. Well, as awkward as it was, friends, I did listen, so my first change to my website is that I'm smiling! Take it in, because I'm not quite sure how long it will last. I do, however, take this very seriously.

2. Services Page- I have done a lot of contemplating and evaluating about my prices. With my experience and level of education, I should be charging more. I have decided to raise my hair cut prices to $38. My color prices are $5 more and everything else shall remain the same price. Thank you for understanding. I appreciate your support.

Along with this, I have added a "Make a Payment" button if you wish to pre-pay or some other arrangement has been made!

COMING SOON!! An entirely new SPA HAIR MENU! Basically, there will be hair cut packages available. Check back for more!

3. Portfolio- New pictures have been added to my portfolio. Again, thank you GLAMs for all of your support!

4. Promotions- "Lighten Up"- 10 Foils for $25- What an amazing deal! You better book fast, before I run out of appointments! Also, If you make a donation to my salon, between $10 and $100, I will double your donation in the form of a gift certificate. This means HUGE savings!

5. Hours- Mondays and Tuesdays, by phone appointment only, I will travel to your house and do hair services. If you have a big family and want everyone's hair cut at the same time, or a spa party at your house, contact me and we will make arrangements.

One more thing COMING SOON!! I will be creating an online store. Get your products directly through me, via my website and pick them up at your next appointment.

Genevee's Studio

I am planning on opening a salon in May called Genevee's Studio, located in downtown Lafayette, IN. It has always been my dream to open a business, ever since I was a child and drew up blueprints for a store called "The Earth Store". The concept of the Earth Store was that everything would be made of recycled materials, reusable materials, or would help reduce waste. You would bring in your own containers for everything from ketchup to gummy bears, mostly because those were two things I cared about at that point in my life. The outside of the building was a bio-dome with the earth painted on the outside.

Now, I'm mostly grown up and ready to start my own business. It's time for me to get my "big girl" pants on, so to speak. This will take a lot of hard work, dedication, sweat, tears, and gratification and I am looking forward to every moment. I just keep visualizing the final product: my baby, my dream. I imagine myself sitting in my stylist chair, just taking everything in with a deep breath, before I have to stand back up and start working diligently again. I will not give up, without knowing I put up a really good fight.

My tentative start date is May 1, 2010. I will keep you posted as I move along. You are all invited to my Open House. There will be more information to come soon! Thank you! -Genevee

The Stories Vintage Items Hold

Today I went thrift shopping, as I often like to do. I was taking my time and carefully looking at all of the jewelry underneath the glass, when I noticed a vintage gold owl necklace with amber beads for eyes. I thought it was the most intriguing piece of jewelry. I love jewelry, clothing, furniture that is definitely vintage, but also has modern lines, colors, and patterns or works well with more modern clothing.

As I looked at the necklace closer, my eye caught another necklace beside it. It too was an owl. Now I was intrigued and really wanted to see how many owl necklaces there were beneath that glass, thus the hunt began. I believe there ended up being six or seven. Then the woman behind the counter pulled out a small plastic box with more owl pendants and necklaces. Each one was unique and special. Some were small, some were large, some were dainty, while others were bulky. There were some that were more eclectic and odd looking and others were more conventional.

Another woman who was shopping in the store, walked up beside me and looked at the owls with me. She said quietly, with a respectful tone, "It's kind of sad sometimes when you know someone died and now we're looking at their things". It then occurred to me that I was so focused on the colors, the lines, the uniqueness and expression of each one, I failed to think about their story. I suppose someone could have just decided to give up on their massive collection of owls, but it seems unlikely. Her words made me really appreciate the true meaning of "vintage" and why vintage things are so special and unique. I decided to buy the first owl necklace that had caught my eye.

Every vintage item holds a story of it's own. We don't always know the history of an item, all of the people who owned it, where they got it, all of the places they may have traveled, so we have to create it in our minds. When I look at this beautiful piece of jewelry, I wonder who wore it. I wonder what kind of person she was. I wonder what happened. I look at it with pride, because I am carrying on this owl's story, and I realize I must do it with care.

The owl has a story to tell.

To Tiara, or Not to Tiara: That is the Question.

My wedding is less than four weeks away. Since I began planning, I have bought two different veils and changed my idea for my hairstyle four times. Now I am wondering: Should I or should I not, wear a tiara?

Overall, I would not consider myself a "tiara" sort of girl. I opted for the black chair covers rather than the white, and my bridesmaids are walking down the aisle in leopard print dresses, black birdcage veils, and clutches with diamonds in place of rose bouquets. I actually originally wanted to walk down the aisle to Brian May from Queen playing "The Wedding March", but was disabused of it.

Yet, when I imagine myself walking down the aisle, I look like a Princess. There are crystals shimmering from my dress and veil. Everything is soft and bellowing. Occasionally, I do imagine falling on my way up the stairs to the stage, which is highly plausible, but mostly I imagine myself as graceful and elegant.

Could I actually be a "tiara" sort of girl? I guess I'm still figuring that out. I thought I would know by the end of this post, but I'm still at a loss. Fortunately, I still have four weeks to decide and really, it is just one day. One very special day.

Hello, Everyone! As you probably already know, I will be doing booth rental at the South side Christina and Company off of Concord Rd. starting Wednesday, May 12th. Jen and I are very excited for all of our friends, family, and clients to see our space and how we've decorated it. We've been working really hard to pull everything together and are hoping you will love it!

We're hoping we achieved our goal of creating a relaxing, exotic, and eclectic spa setting. We're looking forward to seeing you soon!

I know it’s been awhile since I’ve written anything, but rest assured my friends, I have not given up on my blog. As if I wasn’t busy enough with working full time, taking care of kids, my house, etc., etc., I have decided to open a vintage clothing store on Etsy.com! I’ve only been working on this endeavor for a few days, but thus far, I’ve had a lot of fun shopping for great vintage finds, taking photographs, and creating my own little shop. It’s three things I love doing most, all wrapped up in one package.I sold my first item today and was thrilled! It is a 1970’s cranberry suede purse and is so adorable, I’m actually having trouble giving it up!Thank you for your patience, as I balance everything out. I hope you enjoy my store. Patent No. 4,022,227-The Combover

While out at my favorite pub last week, the topic of Gene Keady possibly having the best combover ever came up in the discussion. As we were racking our brains, trying to think of other people in history who could possibly have a better combover, I suddenly felt inspired to do some research, and then write about it on my blog.

I thought I would come up with a funny article about a well-known hairstyle where balding men grow their hair out, then completely comb their hair over from one side of the head to the other, in an attempt to mask their lack of hair growth in certain areas of the head. The concept is completely ridiculous, because you're really not disguising anything, but rather drawing more attention to it, despite your best intentions.
I imagined finding all kinds of famous people in history with combovers and giving people a laugh with the absurdity of their over-the-top styles. Instead, I discovered through my research, that there is more depth to this subject than originally anticipated.

First of all, I found out that there is actually a patent on the instructions for doing a comb over using three sections of hair and wrapping them around the head in a specific way. Frank and Donald Smith, a father and son duo from Florida, are the owners of U.S. Patent No. 4,022,227, issued in 1977, though Frank Smith is since deceased. In fact, in 2004 they won the Ig Nobel Prize, an award given by an organization called Improbable Research, which is defined as research that first makes you laugh, then makes you think. That has been an accurate description of my experience since I made jokes about combovers at the pub last week.

I also learned that there is a documentary out called Combover: The Movie. Check out the trailer here.In the documentary, Chris Marino is followed by cameras for 16 months, through various places in the United States, searching for the perfect combover. I have yet to see it, as my new-found fascination started less than a week ago, but I must admit it looks interesting and I'm looking forward to watching it.

Some famous combovers belong to Donald Trump (though his hairstyle is technically considered a "comb forward"), Gene Keady, ‘Baldy Man', and my personal favorite, Homer J. Simpson. Rudy Giuliani gave uphis combover in 2002. This hairstyle seems to be becoming a lost art, because many men are opting to go to hair clubs or are cutting their hair extremely short instead, which I must admit I prefer, despite my interest in the documentary.

In Hollywood, they refer to a combover as a "swept ant'ny," to give it a more respectable name. The Urban Dictionary defines "swept ant'ny" as "a hairstyle used by balding men; comb over."

No matter how you look at it, whether it be to laugh at the absurdity of it, embrace it as another part of our culture, or possibly both (which would be my recommendation), there's a lot more that goes into a combover than people realize. Who would think there would be a patent, an award, a documentary, along with a more respectable name?

And now, I shall leave you with an alternative -- the mullet or possibly a toupee?

With names like "I'm Not Really a Waitress," "Tickle My Francey," and "No Spain, No Gain," many people think it would be exciting to be the person who comes up with the names for OPI nail polish or wonder aloud what kind of person it takes to come up with such creative names.

Suzi Weiss-Fischmann is the Artistic Director and Executive Vice President of OPI. With over 20 years as Artistic Director for OPI, she is referred to as the First Lady of nails. She is the face behind the color pallet and the names. Suzi, along with six other people, comes up with the names of the colors first, then design the colors to match. Her inspiration comes from traveling and looking at fashion trends for the season.

OPI was founded in 1981, by George Schaeffer, Company President and CEO. It started out as a dental company called Odontorium Products Inc. The acrylic nail business at that time had become very popular, and they discovered that the same chemical used to make dentures was also used in acrylic nails. They hired a chemist to help them make a product for nail technicians. People loved it so much, the company decided to start a nail product business called OPI.

In more current news, Suzi Weiss-Fischmann has lent 20 of her most popular nail colors to the Dell Design Studio, where a line of computer skins is being created. Now, you'll be able to match your nail color to your laptop!
